George Foreman, the legendary American heavyweight boxer and Olympic gold medalist, has died at the age of 76. His family announced his passing in a statement shared on social media late Friday, remembering him as a man of deep faith, a devoted family figure, and a champion both inside and outside the ring. Foreman rose from a difficult upbringing in Marshall, Texas, to international acclaim. Born in 1949, he was raised in a low-income household and dropped out of school before finding direction through boxing.

George Foreman’s athletic journey began with a gold medal at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, where he captured the world’s attention at just 19 years old. He turned professional soon after and quickly built a dominant record, winning 37 consecutive bouts. In 1973, he defeated then-undefeated heavyweight champion Joe Frazier in just two rounds, knocking him down six times. The victory marked the beginning of his first reign as heavyweight world champion.

However, George Foreman’s title run ended in 1974 in the iconic “Rumble in the Jungle,” when he suffered his first professional loss to Muhammad Ali. The fight, held in Kinshasa, Zaire, is remembered as one of boxing’s most historic showdowns. After a second professional loss in 1977, Foreman retired and turned his focus to religion, becoming an ordained minister and founding a church in Houston, Texas. He later described his spiritual transformation as the most defining chapter of his life. A decade later, driven by a renewed sense of purpose and a desire to support his youth center, he returned to the sport in a remarkable comeback.

In 1994, at the age of 45, George Foreman reclaimed the heavyweight title by defeating Michael Moorer, becoming the oldest heavyweight champion in boxing history. He officially retired three years later, closing his career with 76 wins, including 68 by knockout, and only five losses. Beyond boxing, Foreman became a successful entrepreneur. George Foreman licensed his name to a portable electric grill that became a household staple.

The George Foreman Grill, first released in 1994, went on to sell more than 100 million units worldwide, earning him financial success that surpassed his boxing earnings. Tributes from across the sports and political worlds have poured in. Fellow boxing legends and public figures praised George Foreman not only for his accomplishments in the ring but also for his character and generosity. He is survived by his wife and 12 children, including five sons he named George, a symbol of unity and legacy within his family. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
