BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has approved a €2.3 million emergency humanitarian aid package aimed at responding to cholera outbreaks across four African nations. This funding will benefit Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad. The resources are designated to support treatment services, enhance disease surveillance, improve access to safe water, and bolster sanitation initiatives. Health authorities continue to battle outbreaks in West and Central Africa, with Nigeria experiencing the largest surge among the four countries, particularly in Borno State, which is at the epicenter of its outbreak.

EU channels €2.3 million into Africa cholera response
Cholera response funding targets treatment, clean water, sanitation and disease surveillance.

Nigeria will receive €1.5 million from this emergency fund. This assistance will facilitate the deployment of response teams, supply cholera treatment materials, and support water treatment at public points and within households. The funding will also enable health workers to strengthen community-based surveillance, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Additional measures include case management, public awareness campaigns, and community outreach programs. These initiatives aim to reduce transmission rates and increase access to treatment in regions with high infection levels.

Reported cholera cases across Africa saw a significant increase in 2026. According to the World Health Organization, there were 90,049 cases documented in 18 countries within the African Region through June 28. During this period, health authorities also recorded 1,528 deaths. Nigeria alone accounted for 26,848 cases and 181 deaths, with 19,887 new cases and 97 fatalities reported just in June. Borno State contributed over 95% of Nigeria’s total cases, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno among the hardest-hit locations.

Emergency funding boosts outbreak response efforts

The Central African Republic is set to receive €500,000 from this aid package. These funds will support patient care, vaccination campaigns, sanitation projects, and access to clean water. They will also enhance disease detection, community engagement, and safe burial practices where necessary. By June 28, health data indicated 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country. The allocated resources will help local response teams quickly identify new cases and maintain treatment services during the ongoing outbreak.

Cameroon will be allocated €100,000 to strengthen community response efforts. The funds will cover additional personnel, medicines, treatment units, and oral rehydration points. As of June 28, Cameroon reported 108 cases and six deaths. Chad is set to receive €200,000 for sanitation, water access, community surveillance, and patient care, with 109 cases and three deaths reported in the same period. Collectively, the four countries’ allocations total the full €2.3 million emergency fund.

Nigeria sees notable spike in June cholera cases

In June, authorities across Africa documented 27,954 new cholera cases in 12 nations, marking a 95% increase compared to May. The region also reported 284 deaths related to cholera during that month. Nigeria recorded the highest number of new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. The surge in Nigeria was primarily driven by Borno State, where conflict, displacement, inadequate sanitation, and seasonal rainfall have compounded existing health challenges in affected communities.

Cholera results in severe diarrhea after individuals ingest contaminated food or water containing Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Without prompt treatment, serious infections can cause rapid dehydration and pose life-threatening risks. The EU aid aims to address immediate needs in the four recipient countries by expanding treatment capacity, enhancing surveillance, supporting vaccination efforts where applicable, improving sanitation, and ensuring safer water supplies. It also promotes direct community involvement in outbreak-affected areas. The €2.3 million emergency package supplies critical resources to bolster national and humanitarian efforts tackling the persistent regional cholera crisis.
