BEACONSAT by Austria poised to debut as the nation’s inaugural military satellite

VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria’s first military satellite is set to be launched as part of the BEACONSAT project, making it the largest satellite ever developed in the country. This spacecraft, designed to monitor disruptions in global navigation satellite systems from low Earth orbit, will primarily target jamming and spoofing activities affecting services like GPS and Galileo. The launch is scheduled for February 2027, using a Falcon 9 rocket.

BEACONSAT set to become Austria’s first military satellite
BEACONSAT is planned for a February 2027 launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9.

The mission aims to pinpoint areas where navigation signals are disrupted, providing essential data for military operations and technical assessments. Jamming involves radio interference that weakens or blocks signals critical for accurate positioning, while spoofing introduces counterfeit signals that can mislead navigation devices. Such interference can impact sectors like aviation, maritime, transportation, and beyond.

Within Austria’s expanding military space efforts, the Defence Ministry regards BEACONSAT as a technological demonstration. The satellite will experiment with orbit-based detection methods for navigation interference and gather data about affected zones. The project aligns with Austria’s broader work on satellite navigation, communications, and space-based reconnaissance. In 2023, the ministry adopted a military space strategy outlining development objectives through 2035 and beyond.

European and Austrian Technologies Integrated in Satellite

GATE Space leads the BEACONSAT initiative, providing propulsion, structural components, and thermal management systems. The Austrian firm, spun off from TU Wien in 2022, specializes in spacecraft propulsion and has completed over 8,000 hot-fire tests in atmospheric and vacuum conditions. The project has also received approximately 750,000 euros from Austrian public funds for technological advancements.

Additional partners contribute vital systems for the satellite’s navigation monitoring role. Graz’s IGASPIN supplies interference detection and analysis technology for global navigation satellite systems. Denmark’s Space Inventor contributes hardware, including the onboard computer. The European Space Agency also backs the project through its Marketplace program, which facilitates testing commercial space systems in operational environments during technology demonstrations.

Launch to Mark Austria’s First Military Satellite Mission

BEACONSAT’s primary focus is on collecting data related to interference, with no weapons or offensive capabilities onboard. Its orbit-based monitoring will identify patterns associated with jamming and spoofing activities. The Defence Ministry announced in 2026 that the project’s funding is around 1 million euros. Following deployment in 2027, the satellite will initially function as a research and demonstration platform for new technology.

Austria anticipates the February 2027 launch as the commencement of its inaugural military satellite mission. SpaceX will launch BEACONSAT aboard a Falcon 9, according to the plan. Once in orbit, the satellite will gather information on signals disruptions affecting satellite navigation and transmit data for analysis. This initiative provides Austria with an orbital platform dedicated to studying GNSS interference and testing space technologies for military and security purposes.
