Expansion of Eurozone Membership Shapes 2026 Inflation Data
Since Bulgaria adopted the euro on Jan. 1, 2026, the euro area now comprises 21 countries. Data through December 2025 reflect the previous 20-member configuration. Figures from January 2026 onward encompass the expanded currency zone. The European Union statistical system employs a chain-index formula for changes in euro area membership, ensuring that the inflation series accurately reflect current composition while preserving continuity with earlier data.
Eurostat plans to release the full harmonised consumer-price data for August on Sept. 17, 2026. The subsequent flash estimate for September inflation is scheduled for Oct. 2. The harmonised index monitors price changes for consumer goods and services paid by households. Year-on-year inflation compares prices to the same month in the previous year, while monthly figures measure the change from the immediately preceding month, providing a snapshot of short-term price movements across the euro zone.
