BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Euro area annual inflation increased to an estimated 3.3% in August 2026, rising from 2.9% in July. The inflation rate was 2.8% in June and 2.0% in August 2025. Eurostat announced the preliminary figure on Sept. 1. Consumer prices grew by 0.4% from July according to the harmonised index of consumer prices. This latest data clearly indicates a rise in headline inflation across the entire single-currency zone.

Energy lifts euro area inflation to 3.3% in August
Energy inflation reached 14.3% as euro area consumer prices accelerated in August 2026.

Among the primary categories of inflation, energy prices experienced the most significant annual increase. The energy inflation rate reached 14.3% in August, up from 10.3% in July. Additionally, energy prices went up 2.9% compared to the previous month. Services inflation decreased slightly to 3.0% from 3.3%. Non-energy industrial goods inflation grew to 1.2% from 0.9%, while food, alcohol, and tobacco inflation remained steady at 1.2%.

Metrics that exclude certain categories showed more modest shifts during the month. Inflation excluding energy stayed at 2.2% in August. The rate excluding energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco decreased to 2.4% from 2.5%. Inflation excluding energy and unprocessed food declined to 2.1% from 2.2%. These alternative measures offer distinct perspectives on price changes after removing categories that can fluctuate sharply from month to month.

Energy Prices Dominate Inflation Rise in August

Inflation rates varied significantly across the euro area’s 21 member states. Lithuania recorded the highest estimate at 5.8%, while Cyprus reached 5.2% and Bulgaria 5.1%. Spain’s inflation stood at 4.5%, Belgium at 4.2%, and Luxembourg at 4.0%. Estonia had the lowest estimate at 1.3%. Malta followed with 1.9%, and Finland was at 2.4%. Germany’s rate was 2.9%, France registered 2.7%, and Italy 3.2%.

Monthly consumer price changes also showed variability across the bloc. Belgium experienced a 2.1% rise from July, Luxembourg increased by 1.8%, and Cyprus saw a 1.5% monthly gain. France and Bulgaria each rose by 0.8%, while Ireland, Spain, and Malta increased by 0.6%. Finland saw a 0.4% decrease. Slovakia reported no change, Germany’s prices rose 0.2%, and Italy’s increased by 0.1%.

Expansion of Eurozone Membership Shapes 2026 Inflation Data

Since Bulgaria adopted the euro on Jan. 1, 2026, the euro area now comprises 21 countries. Data through December 2025 reflect the previous 20-member configuration. Figures from January 2026 onward encompass the expanded currency zone. The European Union statistical system employs a chain-index formula for changes in euro area membership, ensuring that the inflation series accurately reflect current composition while preserving continuity with earlier data.

Eurostat plans to release the full harmonised consumer-price data for August on Sept. 17, 2026. The subsequent flash estimate for September inflation is scheduled for Oct. 2. The harmonised index monitors price changes for consumer goods and services paid by households. Year-on-year inflation compares prices to the same month in the previous year, while monthly figures measure the change from the immediately preceding month, providing a snapshot of short-term price movements across the euro zone.
