Frontex Reports 37% Decrease in EU Border Crossings as Major Routes Experience Decline

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – Preliminary border data indicates that irregular crossings into the European Union fell by 37% during the initial seven months of 2026. Frontex recorded approximately 61,000 detections from January through July, a decline compared to the same period in 2025. The majority of the EU’s primary migration pathways experienced reductions within that timeframe. These figures encompass activity at external borders and reveal notable disparities among routes across the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and eastern borders.

The busiest route during this period was in the Eastern Mediterranean, with 20,232 detections, representing a 28% decrease from 28,068 recorded a year earlier. The Central Mediterranean saw 16,454 detections, a 55% reduction from 36,656. These two routes together made up roughly 60% of the total EU entry detections documented in the data. Libya continued to be the primary departure country for crossings along the Central Mediterranean route during this reporting period.

The Western Mediterranean experienced the most significant growth among key routes. Detected crossings there increased by 37%, reaching 11,217 from 8,175 in the first seven months of 2025. Sea crossings on this route totaled 8,648, up from 7,096 in the previous year. Land detections through June numbered 2,569, compared to 1,079 previously. Conversely, the Western African route decreased by 60% to 4,682. Detections in the Western Balkan route declined by 26% to 4,910, and detections at the Eastern Land Border dropped 44%, reaching 3,209.

Western Mediterranean Remains Unique Amid Overall Decline

Crossings toward the United Kingdom via the Channel also saw a sharp decrease during this period. Authorities recorded 22,469 attempted or completed crossings from the EU side, down 46% from 41,647 in the previous year. These Channel crossing figures are separate from the overall irregular entry data into the bloc. Additionally, data indicated 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, a 9% increase. The total for the seven months excludes extraordinary activity at the external border in Ceuta, Spain, near the end of July.

Frontex assembled these figures based on initial EUROSUR information and estimates available as of Aug. 4. The agency may revise these numbers when national authorities submit updated data. Frontex reports detections, not individual persons, so one individual might appear multiple times in the statistics—such as if detected at different locations or during separate crossing attempts. This distinction applies throughout the dataset and influences how route totals should be interpreted.

Decline in July Continues the Trend from the First Half of 2026

The July figures reinforce the ongoing year-on-year decrease observed in the first half of 2026. Up to June, authorities recorded over 49,000 irregular border crossings, which is also 37% lower than the same period in 2025. At that point, detections in the Western Mediterranean were 17% higher than the previous year. The full seven-month data shows that this increase grew to 37%. The Western African route experienced a 67% decline through June, which narrowed to 60% in the seven-month total.

Approximately 3,800 Frontex officers operate at the European Union’s external borders, providing support to national authorities with border management and sea operations. They also assist member states with tasks related to EU migration and asylum policies. The latest border statistics indicate widespread declines across most major entry routes during the first seven months of 2026, with the Western Mediterranean remaining the main exception. Meanwhile, the Eastern and Central Mediterranean routes continued to represent the largest share of detected irregular entries.
