EU mobilizes aircraft and personnel to combat wildfires across Europe

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – As wildfires persist across various regions of Europe, the continent’s countries have intensified collaborative firefighting efforts. Assistance was sought through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism by Belgium and Spain, which faced mounting pressure on their national firefighting resources. In response, aircraft, helicopters, and ground crews were deployed to support local firefighting teams in both nations. Additionally, authorities have employed satellite-based mapping to monitor fire zones and aid emergency response planning across multiple European areas.

Belgium received two rescEU firefighting aircraft from Sweden to assist operations in the Hautes Fagnes region. Germany and Norway contributed two helicopters each, while Dutch aircraft also participated in the firefighting efforts. The most recent assessment confirmed that the fire has scorched over 3,000 hectares. Belgian emergency personnel, military units, farmers, and international crews have been operating across the affected zone, with authorities implementing restrictions around roads and water sources used by responders.

By Monday evening, nearly 500 personnel and more than 120 vehicles had been involved in the Belgian firefighting efforts. Ground teams focused on accessible areas, while aircraft targeted sections that remained hard to reach. Farmers helped maintain water supplies for emergency crews working in the fire zone. Residents of Sourbrodt were permitted to return home, whereas some residents of Küchelscheid still face restrictions due to ongoing fire conditions.

French firefighting units bolster efforts in Spain

Spain received support from France in the form of 104 firefighters and 36 vehicles, aimed at reinforcing operations in Aragón. When European aid arrived, roughly 16,000 hectares had already burned in the region. Authorities in Aragón issued red alert warnings for 14 fire danger zones on Aug. 18, up from eight the day before. Officials also reported extremely dry fuels across several central and northern parts, increasing strain on crews already battling active fires and assessing vulnerable areas.

Satellite mapping by the Copernicus Emergency Management Service has been instrumental in supporting response teams across Belgium, Spain, Greece, Germany, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, France, and Italy. These satellite maps enable emergency managers to estimate burned areas and locate active fire zones. The European Commission plays a key role in coordinating international aid through the civil protection system, facilitating the movement of personnel and equipment across borders upon request from national authorities.

European collaborative efforts bolster multiple national firefighting initiatives

Ahead of the 2026 wildfire season, Europe established a joint reserve comprising 22 firefighting aircraft and five helicopters. Additionally, 777 firefighters from 14 countries have been deployed across Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. This shared system allows governments to seek assistance when their internal capacity becomes strained, with emergency coordinators matching requests to available aircraft, crews, vehicles, and other resources supplied by member nations.

The ongoing firefighting efforts are addressing multiple separate incidents rather than a single transboundary event. Belgium continues to rely on aircraft, helicopters, ground teams, and local logistical support in the Hautes Fagnes. Spain has integrated French firefighters and vehicles into its operations in Aragón. Across Europe, satellite data remains a vital tool for monitoring affected regions. By the end of July, the continent’s burned area was approximately 2.5 times higher than typical levels for this time of year.
